A Guide To Dental Implants – Everything You Need To Know About The Process

Dental implants in Arvada from Candelas Dentistry are the best long-term option for replacing missing teeth. They consist of a metal implant that is surgically placed in the jaw bone, imitating a natural tooth root. Then, an implant restoration like a dental crown is attached to this root, replacing your tooth and restoring your smile.

However, the process for getting dental implants can be a bit complex and confusing. So in this guide, we’ll break things down, and explain everything you need to know about the process, step-by-step.

1. Dental Implant Consultation

To begin, Dr. Kim will schedule a consultation at Candelas Dentistry. He will examine your mouth, discuss your oral health, take digital x-rays and images of your jaw and mouth, and determine if you’re a good candidate for implants.

To get implants, you need to have a healthy and strong jaw bone. If your jaw is weak, you may need additional bone graft surgery to strengthen the area before getting an implant. Dr. Kim will discuss this in more detail with you during your appointment.

2. Implant Placement Surgery

If you are approved for an implant, Dr. Kim will schedule your implant surgery. At this appointment, she will clean and numb the treatment area. You will be sedated for your comfort.

Then, she will open up the gum and jaw tissue where your missing tooth used to be, and she will place a small, screw-shaped titanium implant into this area. Once the implant is in place, she will disinfect the area and suture it shut so that it heals properly.

3. Healing & Recovery

You will be sent home to heal and recover after your treatment. Dr. Kim will give you a variety of instructions to follow to ensure you heal properly. You’ll need to adjust your diet and make a few other lifestyle changes to ensure your implant heals properly.

It takes about 1-2 weeks to heal from the initial surgery. However, it can take up to 6 months for your metal implant to permanently attach to your jaw bone. Because this is what locks the implant in place and ensures its stability, your new tooth can’t be attached until this process is complete.

4. Designing And Fitting Your Implant Restoration

As you heal from your implant surgery, you’ll come in for a few follow-ups at Candelas Dentistry. Dr. Kim will check your healing and recovery progress, and she will also take impressions and photos of your mouth, which will be used to build your new tooth.

She will work closely with a dental lab to build a crown that looks, feels, and functions just like a natural tooth, ensuring a completely seamless result from your treatment.

5. Final Implant Restoration Placement

Once your implant has fully healed and your implant restoration is complete, you will come in for one last appointment at Candelas Dentistry. Dr. Kim will check the restoration to make sure it fits, then she will attach it to your implant permanently.

Then, you’ll be sent home with a brand-new smile. You can care for your new tooth just like you would care for a natural tooth. Brush twice a day, floss once a day, and see Dr. Kim every six months for a checkup. That’s it!
